RMFA presents “Seer Unseen” by Joseph Podlesnik

November 12, 2024

The Rochester Museum of Fine Arts is pleased to announce “Seer Unseen”, an art exhibition featuring works by Joseph Podlesnik in the Carnegie Gallery, at the Rochester Public Library, starting December 9, 2024.

Joseph is trained mainly in drawing and painting and it is this experience that seems to influence his approach to photography.

For Podlesnik, the camera lens depicts perspective too easily, which is why he captures and makes photographs that often frustrate readable perspectival space. For him, the photographic image is not only a window through which to see the visible world, but also a maker of flat surfaces which stunt or block logical space. He sees photography and pictures not only as documentation, but as commenting on or reenacting perception itself.

Podlesnik lives in Phoenix, Arizona and exhibits his work nationally and internationally. He is currently Visual Arts Adjunct Faculty at Stockton University in New Jersey, and is Facilitator for the Digital Photography Cornell Certificate Program. He also served as Lead Faculty, Associate Professor of Art Foundations for the Art Institute of Pittsburgh – Online Division. He received his MFA in drawing & painting from Cornell University.

To describe the exhibition, Joseph states, “One way to look at the reflection work in these photographs is a striving to orchestrate three worlds: 1) the world of the windowed interior space at which I’m pointing my camera, 2) my reflection in that window, 3) the world behind me. When all of these align (in-camera) in ways that I think suggest unity, variety, possibly poeticized self, I think I may have something of interest.”

“Seer Unseen” will be on display until February 28, 2025, with a reception planned for January 4, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. The public is encouraged to attend. The Rochester Public Library is located at 65 South Main Street, Rochester, NH 03867. Visit www.josephpodlesnik.com and www.rochestermfa.org to learn more.

The museum gratefully acknowledges the generous support of its corporate sponsors, community partners, and collaborators, including the City of Rochester, Meredith Village Savings Bank, Back Hill Beer Co., Creative Guts Podcast, and the Greater Rochester Chamber of Commerce.
