Weekend Wanderings: Explorations Not Too Far Off the Main Trail

Matt is a painter, educator, and mayor from Somersworth, NH, whose work is deeply inspired by the conserved natural areas of Seacoast New Hampshire, Southern Maine, and the Great North Woods.

As both a science teacher and local elected official overseeing numerous city parks, Matt’s art often centers around outdoor spaces, drawing from the beauty of the landscapes near his home. Working primarily with oil paints, he creates textured, vibrant pieces that capture scenes not far from the trail’s edge.

Through his work, Matt hopes to inspire others to explore the local sites featured in his art, stating “As an 8th grade science teacher and parent to two high schoolers, I find myself telling kids all too often to ‘go outside.’ It seems only fair that I take my own advice.”
