Michelle Peterson (b. 1986, Hooksett, NH) is a versatile visual artist with a BFA from the New Hampshire Institute of Art (2011) and an MFA from the Institute of Art and Design at New England College (2020). Her artistic practice spans painting, photography, and fiber art.
Peterson’s work is inspired by the ancient technology of string figures, which she integrates into her paintings to explore the interconnected threads of everyday life. As a mother of two, she resides in southern New Hampshire.
Her work has been widely exhibited, including at the Atlantic Gallery in NYC, Collar Works in Troy, NY, the Rochester Museum of Fine Arts in Rochester, NH, and the New Hampshire Artist Association in Portsmouth, NH.
One of her notable series, “From the mouths of babes,” featured in the exhibition Threads (July 13-28, 2024), involves stitching quotes from children in Gaza onto worn clothing items. This hand-embroidered series reflects a slow, meditative process chosen by Peterson to honor the voices of the children while symbolizing mending and repair.
